6 Tips for Fall and Winter Home Maintenance in the South

Certain home maintenance tasks should be completed each season to prevent structural damage, save energy, and keep all your home’s systems running properly. These maintenance tasks are most important for the South in fall and winter. For a comprehensive list of tasks by season, refer to the to-do lists to the right of this article. Fall and winter conditions in the South vary dramatically from the northern part of the region to the southern coastline. But basic maintenance tips apply no matter where you live. Key maintenance tasks to perform • Get your heating system in order. Heating systems in the South vary—there are generally more gas furnaces in the northern areas, and more electric heat pump systems toward the coastal South. Programmable thermostats are important for both kinds of heating systems, as they can help save around $180 a year on your energy bills. If you have a heat pump, make sure you install a programmable thermostat especially designed for heat pumps, says home inspector Bill Loden of Insight Home Inspection in Madison, Ala. Programmable thermostats for heat pumps are specially designed to keep these systems working at peak efficiency. Schedule your fall HVAC checkup promptly; you can expect to pay $50 to $100 for a heating tune-up. Look What’s Happening: Zion Crossroads, VA

Do you know about the up and coming little town of Zion Crossroads VA?? If not, it may be worth knowing about! Here’s a description from their facebook page… “Zion Crossroads is an unincorporated community in Louisa and Fluvanna counties, Virginia, at the intersection of James Madison Highway (U.S. Route 15) and Three Notch Road (U.S. Route 250). About 2½ miles north is Green Springs National Historic Landmark District, a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The community, located just south of Interstate 64, has seen significant development in recent years, both commercial (including a Walmart distribution center) and residential (Spring Creek golf community).” Well, Zion is getting a face lift and has this crazy new “diamond interchange” coming, which is the first of it’s kind in VA. When driving the new DDI configuration, motorists will proceed through a traffic signal at the interchange and follow their lane to the opposite side of the roadway. Motorists needing to access Interstate 64 will merge left using an on-ramp without having to stop or wait for oncoming traffic to pass. Through traffic proceeds to a second traffic signal and follows their lane back to the right side of the road. Construction activity on the $6.88-million DDI will continue through its April 15 completion date. The interchange is the first of its kind in Virginia. We are excited to see what will happen with this location over the next several years! Currently, the area offers a Lowe’s home improvement store, a Walmart super center, several restaurants and shops, branches of UVA doctors offices, a veterinary hospital, Spring Creek Golf Course, and more is on...
